Manager - Ground Systems Engineering

Rocket Lab USA Auckland, Auckland (Onsite) Full-Time

ABOUT ROCKET LAB

Rocket Lab is an end-to-end space company delivering responsive launch services, complete spacecraft design and manufacturing, payloads, satellite components, and more – all with the goal of opening access space. The rockets and satellites we build, and launch enable some of the most ambitious and vital space missions globally, supporting scientific exploration, Earth observation and missions to combat climate change, national security, and exciting new technology demonstrations.

Our Electron rocket has become the second most frequently launched U.S. rocket annually and has delivered more than 230 satellites to orbit, all while we work to develop Neutron, our upcoming medium-lift, reusable launch vehicle for larger constellation deployment. Our Space Systems business designs and builds our extensive line of satellites, payloads, and their components, including spacecraft that have been selected to support NASA missions to the Moon and Mars and components used on the James Webb Space Telescope.

Lead the Future of Space Exploration as Manager - Ground Systems Engineering

Rocket Lab is redefining what’s possible in space, and we’re looking for a visionary Manager - Ground Systems Engineering to lead the team responsible for the systems that make our missions possible. If you’re ready to take charge of cutting-edge engineering projects and inspire a team to achieve the unthinkable, this is your opportunity to make history.

About the Role

As the Manager - Ground Systems Engineering, you’ll lead a team of up to 15 engineers tasked with designing, building, testing, operating, and maintaining the systems that support Rocket Lab’s launch vehicles and spacecraft. You’ll oversee large-scale test stands, tooling, and launch pad systems, including vehicle-to-pad interfaces, fluid systems, structures, mechanisms, power systems, and instrumentation.

This role is focused on delivering new technologies to automate and optimise test and launch operations while improving reliability across Rocket Lab’s NZ and US sites. You’ll be responsible for growing your team, driving innovation, and ensuring the safety and efficiency of all ground systems.

  • Work closely with vehicle engineering teams to define requirements and verification processes.
  • Collaborate with site teams for system build, maintenance, and operations.
  • Ensure compliance with regulatory engineering and safety requirements in NZ and the USA.

Team Development & Management

  • Recruit, mentor, and develop a high-performing team of engineers.
  • Promote and maintain a positive, collaborative, and innovative team environment.
  • Manage staff performance and administer professional development programs.
  • Plan and manage projects to ensure on-time, on-budget delivery.

Financial Management

  • Develop and maintain accurate budgets to support financial reporting requirements.

WHAT TO EXPECT

We’re on a mission to unlock the potential of space to improve life on Earth, but that’s not an easy task. It takes hard work, determination, relentless innovation, teamwork, grit, and an unwavering commitment to achieving what others often deem impossible. Our people out-think, out-work and out-pace. We pride ourselves on having each other’s backs, checking our egos at the door, and rolling up our sleeves on all tasks big and small. We thrive under pressure, work to tight deadlines, and our focus is always on how we can deliver, rather than dwelling on the challenges that stand in the way.
